The time spent at the Kampung was a very good break for me, with the cutting off of the use of all types of communication medias. All 4 days were just spent communicating with people and getting involved in the lives of others, including those of my team members. I did not exactly notice how good it was until I reached home and remembered that I have not spent any time in front of any of my idiot boxes for the last 4 days! The best part is, I did not even miss it!
Comparison 1:
City Life
Our lives in KL are so busy that spending time with people becomes rigid, compartmentalised, short and limited. Our lives are engrossed in
Kampung Life
The villagers spend almost every waking time together, either chatting, doing stuff, play or helping one another.
Comparison 2:
City people
People living in the city are a suspicious lot even after the point of introduction, and are careful in extending themselves to others, whether in all sincerity or not. There is a limit to the help we give to another because time is a main concern. City people are also a complicated lot.
Kampung people
The villagers are welcoming and friendly once they know that you are at the kampung without any ill intentions. They take us as we are, without hoping for reciprocation. They are definitely simple in the way they think, live and behave. Amazing!
Comparison 3:
City pace of life
Everything is done in a mad rush, and personally, I think people in KL generally do not know how to slow down. Things become task oriented, instead of relationship building.
Kampung pace of life
Life is just slow here, even the pace of talking and thinking are slow (I don't mean slow in catching an idea but more of the pace they take to think about osmething). Well, except for the motorbike adrenaline rush, people here are not uptight about timing.
Comparison 4:
City lights
The city is brightly lit, and it is almost close to impossible that we can see any stars at night!
Kampung lights
It's close to nothing except the houses which have lights in their own houses. If I am not mistaken, they don't have street lights along the kampung road which allows us to appreciate nature in the dark!
Comparison 5:
City environment
We are surrounded by concrete buildings in the city, and there is hardly anywhere else other than designated parks which has greeneries, insects and animals.
Kampung environment
The village is surrounded by the nature, and instead of hearing sounds of automobiles, we hear sounds of insects and animals from the jungle. The only thing I was afraid of encountering in the village was snakes!
These are some of the comparisons I can come up with regarding to the Orang Asli missions trip held last weekend. A great time indeed for me to be reminded to get back to the basics. Cheers. =)
